Miami Child Custody Court Dos and Don'ts

Child custody cases are among some of the most common causes that make it to court yet remain some of the most difficult. Not only are there many emotions involved from both parties and other family members, but it can also be difficult for the court. Judges are concerned with the best-case scenario for the child, therefore it is important to remember some essential dos and don’ts before heading to court for child custody with your Miami family lawyer.

Before heading to court for a child custody case

  • DO make sure that all communication between you and the other parent, whether verbal or written, pertains to your children. However, remember any written or electronic communication may be brought up by a judge in court.

  • DO stay involved with your child, regardless of where they are living, and especially when it comes to their education. Attend the parent/teacher conferences you can, stay in contact with their teacher, and be highly proactive in addressing any issues your child may be having. Attend any extracurricular activities like basketball games, science fairs, and anything else they may be involved in.

  • DON’T use social media. You are not legally bound not to post, but any information you post may be misconstrued. It is best to keep personal information private, especially when it comes to your child custody case.

  • DON’T fight in front of your children. You want the process to be as smooth as possible. If you are having issues with the other parent, inform your Miami FL divorce attorney immediately.
