LGBT Couples May Wish to Become Equal Legal Parents
Since 2015, same sex marriage has been legal in Florida. During the same year, the statute preventing same sex couples from adopting was also removed. Same sex couples living in Florida may have adopted as single parents to circumvent the ban. If that’s the case, parents may wish to take the steps to become legal parents, if they haven’t already done so.
Even if the living situation has worked out with one legal parent, same sex couples may wish to proceed with legal adoption among both parents. If circumstances were to change in the future, both parents would have legal rights to make decisions regarding their children. For example, the relationship may break down and result in divorce or a spouse may become deceased. With only one legal parent, this can raise a host of issues for the other spouse/parent.
