Once you have decided that divorce is something you and your spouse will follow through with, it is important to be prepared. Ask yourself where you would like to be in the future, where you want your children to be, what you want to happen to your shared possessions and property. You do not have to have all the answers right away. Not knowing the answers to any of these questions is completely normal. At Rafool, LLC, our family law attorneys Miami help clients like you find the answer to these questions.

Learn to embrace the future. You want to set yourself and your family up for success in the future, ideally in a better situation than the one you are in now.

Do your research. Learn what you can on your own. Make note of issues unique to your case and anything you want to be clarified. A Miami family law lawyer will answer all of your questions, but for many having some knowledge of how the divorce process works can ease stress.

Take stock of your finances, including bank accounts, 401(k)s, stocks, taxes, insurance records, accumulated debt from both you and you and your spouse combined, and any business documentation. Get an idea of what you will need to maintain your standard of living, or at least one you are comfortable having. Know that it may change, and be at peace with that possibility.

Resolve as many emotions as possible. Anger, frustration, and regret are all common feelings but, left unchecked, can have a negative impact on your divorce process and can deepen these emotions for both parties. Do not be afraid of therapy and counseling - being set free from past hurts, or at least starting the process of doing so, will help you focus on attaining the best possible future for you and your family.
