Reducing the Impact of Divorce on Children

In many acrimonious divorces where children are involved, strong feelings of animosity may develop between the parents. These feelings may “spill” out and affect the children negatively. As this can leave a lasting impact on children, it’s important to minimize the effects of the divorce on the children.

For starters, here is one tip we’ve mentioned in the past: refrain from speaking negatively about the other parent when in the presence of children. In this case, the common adage “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all” applies quite appropriately.

During this difficult period, your children may need to learn to accept the new family dynamic. Don’t make things harder for them by trying to make them choose between parents or which parent is right. The child needs both of the parents and they should be permitted to arrive at decisions on their own regarding the changes in the relationship with both parents.

While the well-being of the children is highly important, don’t forget that you are also a priority. By taking care of yourself and not allowing stress to distract you, you’ll be better able to help children process their emotions while keeping a neutral attitude towards the other parent.
